It’s new years eve here in Oz and I’m having a hard time seeing why the NYE Fireworks aren’t cancelled…
Australia is burning and sitting in the middle of its most deadly bushfire season yet. The Australian Government is lining its pockets with money for its NYE Fireworks event at Sydney Harbour which does not surprise me. Normally, I wouldn’t care, but after almost being threatened by bushfires burning in my area, I’m having very different thoughts.
It’s one thing to have NYE Fireworks when the bushfires aren’t so bad, but this year is different. I hate the excuse the government has made:
The event was planned months in advance and we can’t get our money back now.
They just don’t want to lose the money they’ve gotten from people who have paid for their place in one of the local parks in the Sydney CBD to watch the light show at 9pm and/or midnight.
Local Councils Cancel Their NYE Fireworks
However, a lot of local councils have decided to cancel their own firework shows due to the total fire bans. Councils who have cancelled their displays include:
- Rowland Reserve
- Armidale (postponed for now)
While many people are saying that the cancellation of some displays is ruining the fun of NYE Fireworks, pull your heads out of your butts! Our nation burns and it’s too dangerous to have explosives being set off. Yeah, fireworks are EXPLOSIVES! Also, many areas are affected by bushfires and people are losing their homes and livelihoods!
Look at Campbelltown for example, the Greek Wattle Creek blaze is still threatening the outskirts of the area! It is also under constant threat of ember attacks.
Campbelltown Council did the right thing in cancelling their NYE Fireworks. At least they care about their citizens.
Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of Sydney needs to think about the people affected. Many people can’t afford to go outside due to respiratory issues. People who want the event to go ahead need to think about others and not just their desire to party until 3am.
